Clifton was a principal in the general practice law firm of Clifton & Associates in Providence, an assistant city solicitor in Cranston and a hearing officer for the Rhode Island Department of Education. He has also served as a special assistant attorney general in the Department of Attorney General, a hearing officer for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and a Superior Court arbitrator.
Clifton earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State University at Los Angeles and a Juris Doctorate from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Mr. Clifton has been active in a wide range of civic and community affairs, including the Rhode Island Bar Association and its Committee on Involvement of Minorities; the Thurgood Marshall Law Society of Rhode Island (formerly the Rhode Island Black Lawyers Association); Rhode Island Legal Services; the Urban League of Rhode Island; the NAACP; Trinity Repertory Company; the National Conference for Community & Justice; and Employer Support for the Guard and Reserves. He is also a member of the Rhode Island Supreme Court's Committee on Character and Fitness, and a director of The Beacon Mutual Insurance Company.
